About the Sacred Tree Fellowship
Hello! I'm Herman Beck-Chenoweth, the co-founder of this group. I live in rural Missouri and since 1995, when I had a numinous experience one day while cutting hay I have dedicated myself to sharing information about Spirituality with other seekers. When you scroll down to the next section you'll have a pretty good idea about what we share about Native American Spirituality for the modern world.
I grew up a Lutheran and was pretty sure I was going to be a minister. Then I attended a college course in comparative religions that showed me that after one gets past the myth and dogma, at the highest levels, nearly all religions teach the same things.
We have to recognize that other cultures have had their own spiritual teachers. We can’t be in an exclusive position in the regard to humankind because it is vitally important that we evolve some common philosophical religious assumptions in order that humankind can survive. Without them, there is a good chance we won’t.
It is very important that we recognize that God is One. There are a lot of differences among religions at lower levels. At the highest levels they become as One.
The mystical sect of Christianity is called the Gnostics. Buddhism has Zen. Hinduism has the Yogis. Judaism has the Hassidim. Moslems have their Sufis. If you study their writings, you will discover again and again that they talk about the same phenomena, the same experiences, the same realizations. Their teachers have obviously been to the same territory. There are certain realms of the mind that if humankind ventures into them, it changes him or her and they come back different.
You may notice that all of these religions come from different areas of the globe. Their spiritual teachers were speaking to the people in terms that the people could relate to.
Most folks believed the teachers to be Sons or Daughters of God. For example, Jesus spoke from the Middle East. Buddha taught in India. Hawaiians learned from a teacher that understood the needs of people living on the islands.
All of these religions were taught using the myths and legends that folks experienced daily. Here in America, Native Americans practiced a spirituality that took into account the experiences that made sense to them day by day. That spirituality taught them to respect nature, the weather, animals and history.
Spirituality is a generic term for how we relate to our Universe and how God and our Universe relates to us, and what is our proper relationship and perspective in the Universe. Our aboriginal people brought their beliefs in a fair and just Universe to us and have lived here for thousands and thousands of successful years.
That Spirituality has now morphed into Native American Spirituality for the modern world. This site brings together Spiritual insights from many fine folks from many backgrounds and, as Stephen Gaskin wrote “your religion ought make a difference to you in your daily life; it ought to make it easier for you, not in the sense that you don’t need to try, but that it makes sense to you. It ought to help you out during Childbirth; it ought to help you during the death of someone close to you. It ought to help you out during the tough times of your life.”
This site has many resources for you to work with from Native Elders, to Joseph Campbell, Stephen Gaskin and Emanuel Bronner and myself: Herman Beck-Chenoweth.
